I have some medical conditions that make me concerned about the surgery. Do you have any suggestions?

Patients must complete a medical history form before implant treatment. We evaluate their medical conditions based on how they may affect both the safety of surgery and the likelihood of long-term implant success. We assess whether the patient's overall health is stable enough to undergo the procedure and what level of success can reasonably be expected.​In many cases, patients with certain controlled medical conditions can still be cleared for implant surgery. This often includes current smokers, patients with well-controlled diabetes or hypertension, patients with obesity, and those with mild lung disease. However, for patients with more significant medical concerns, we may need medical consultation and clearance from their physician before proceeding, and treatment must be approached with extra caution. This may include patients with poorly controlled diabetes or hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pacemakers, kidney disease requiring dialysis, a history of mini-stroke, or coronary artery disease with stents placed more than three months ago.​For patients with more recent or unstable cardiovascular or neurologic conditions, such as a recent mini-stroke or coronary stents placed within the past three months, implant surgery is usually postponed. In these situations, we wait until the patient's physician has stabilized the condition and confirms that the patient can be treated more safely.​Patients with uncontrolled diabetes (A1c > 7.5), bisphosphonate usage, daily blood thinner intake, or previous radiation to the head and neck area will need a more thorough assessment before implant surgery is planned.

How much does a dental implant cost?

We understand that implant services are pricey due to the surgical nature of the procedure. For a limited time, we offer one set fee that includes everything: surgery and an implant crown.

Can I sustain implant surgery if I am 75 years old or older?

Our oldest implant patient is 83 years old, and we have a surgical record of nearly 100 implant patients in the 65 to 80 age range. They enjoy their food and are free from dentures.

How long is the implant healing time?

Accepted Answer

Most of our patients get their final implant restoration in about 6 months, though there are always exceptions. Some can complete it in about 3 months, while others may take 9 to 12 months, depending on pre-existing conditions. Generally speaking, if your condition allows implant placement at the time of extraction, you could get your final restoration in about 3-4 months. What are some medications that affect bone healing?

Certain medications can affect bone healing and may influence the success of dental implants.Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which are commonly prescribed for depression, anxiety, bulimia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, have been associated with reduced bone density, altered bone metabolism, and a higher rate of early implant failure in some patients. For patients taking these medications, we often recommend allowing the implants to heal for about six months before placing the final restoration.​Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which are commonly used to treat GERD and stomach ulcers, may also increase the risk of implant failure. These medications include Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, Protonix, AcipHex, and Dexilant. In some cases, the patient may be referred back to the prescribing physician to determine whether it is appropriate to switch to an H2 blocker instead.​Antiresorptive medications, which are often prescribed for osteoporosis or certain types of cancer, also need to be reviewed carefully before implant treatment because they can affect bone turnover and healing.

Can I recieve implant surgery if I have high blood pressure?

I am taking Fosamax, Actonel, Prolia, tamoxifen, or other osteoporosis medication. Can I have get a dental implant?

Dr. Yang will discuss your medication regimen with you and offer appropriate advice regarding the procedure. Please bring us a list of all medications you take daily.

Are there risks and complications with implant surgery?

There are always risks associated with any procedure. It is our office policy to discuss and inform you of the different possibilities before any procedure, so you can make a well-informed decision and have peace of mind.

Question 10

How do I take care of my dental implant after it is placed?

Accepted Answer

Many people think they can stop seeing the dentist once their implant crown is in place. In reality, implants, like your natural teeth, need checkups and regular maintenance, usually every 6 months. Your dentist will provide professional advice on the health of your implant.

Question 11

I am very nervous about surgery. Do you offer sedation in the office?

At this time, we do not offer in-office IV sedation. Dr. Yang will prescribe anti-anxiety medication to relieve your anxiety. Keep in mind that this medication can have side effects and may cause drowsiness or difficulty moving. For that reason, we ask that you have a chaperone come with you and escort you home.

Do I need an occlusal guard with my dental implant?

For most of our implant patients, we recommend a professionally made occlusal guard. Because implants interface with the jaw bone differently than natural teeth, the guard provides effective protection against possible failure.

Will the implant surgery be painful?

Accepted Answer

We always make sure the surgery is as easy and comfortable as possible. Our patients feel relaxed during the procedure. We prescribe pain medication before and after surgery, and we provide postoperative instructions to help you avoid post-surgery complications. Dr. Yang will also prescribe medication to reduce facial swelling.

Can I get dental implants if I am diabetic?

Accepted Answer

High glucose levels in your body can slow down the healing process. It is wise to get your diabetes under control for a successful outcome. A1c is a reliable indicator of your level. Most patients can have their A1c controlled under 7.2 and go on to have a successful surgery and implant restoration.
